India's AIF Universe: what the register does not show

LabelNest Research India's AIF universe  /  Volume 1 of 3 Light / dark Research series  /  Volume 1 India's AIF universe: what the register does not show A data-led account of the funds on SEBI's public register, and of the fields the public record leaves empty. SEBI register 20 Oct 2026 Atlas records 23 Oct 2026 Series Volume 1 of 3 Version 1.0 At a glance Five numbers from the register and the Atlas 2,036 registrations AIF registrations 695 at end-2021 (Chapter 1) Rs 17.53 lakh crore committed 3.9x March 2021 (Chapter 1) 57% of commitments still undrawn Drawdown (Chapter 1) 82% of manager firms run a single fund Managers (Chapter 3) 51% of register funds sit outside Mumbai Geography (Chapter 8) Source: SEBI register of Alternative Investment Funds, data date 20 Oct 2026; SEBI quarterly AIF statistics, June 2026; LabelNest Atlas, data date 23 Oct 2026. Comparison points: end-2021 registrations and March 2021 commitments. Five findings Each is developed in a chapter 1 The universe tripled. 2,036 distinct AIF registration numbers are on SEBI's register, against 695 at the end of 2021. 345 more were registered in 2026 by 16 October, about 36 a month. Chapter 1 2 Capital grew faster. Commitments reached ₹17.53 lakh crore in June 2026, 3.9 times March 2021, but only 43 percent has been paid in. ₹9.94 lakh crore is committed and undrawn, and the paid-in share was 51 percent in 2021. Category II holds 74 percent of commitments and 83 percent of the undrawn amount. Chapter 1 3 The register is silent where it matters. It holds no manager, sponsor, portfolio or LP. 323 serial numbers are missing and 13 numbers are malformed. Atlas links 2,008 of 2,021 register funds (99.4 percent) to a manager. Chapters 2 and 3 4 Most managers are new. Of 1,412 manager firms that look like real firms, 1,156 run one fund. First-time managers were 72 percent of the funds registered in 2026, and fewer come back: about 1 in 10 new managers since 2017 registered a second fund within three years, against about 1 in 5 before. Chapter 3 5 Half the funds sit outside Mumbai, and startups are spread more thinly than funds. 51 percent of register funds are registered outside the city; five states hold 87 percent. Uttar Pradesh has 23,678 recognised startups and 11 registered AIFs. Chapters 8 and 11 Source: SEBI register (20 Oct 2026); LabelNest Atlas (23 Oct 2026). Every figure here is read from NestLens Atlas (login required) on its data date: 20 October 2026 for SEBI's register and statistics, and 23 October 2026 for Atlas records (fund sizes, portfolios and links), which change as the work goes on. A later correction is a new version, not a quiet change. Scope SEBI-registered AIFs (numbers IN/AIF1, IN/AIF2 and IN/AIF3). Funds registered in GIFT City (IFSC) are out of scope. The thesis that this wave is first-time managers doing the same operating work with small teams is a hypothesis: the first half is measured here, the second half cannot be shown yet (chapter 4). Method in one page Spine. Eight dated downloads of SEBI's register (14 December 2025 to 20 October 2026) are stored whole; the latest is matched by registration number to Atlas fund records. Around the spine. Managers, portfolios, LPs and people come from Atlas entity records built from filings, fund and manager websites and press. Each field carries a source and a retrieved date, and links are marked confirmed or inferred where the record says so. Capital. Commitments, funds raised and investments made are SEBI's quarterly statistics, stored as published. Survivors only. Counts by registration year include only funds still on the register today. How the figures were produced This is version 1.0. Each figure was produced by a query on Atlas and recomputed by LabelNest on 23 October 2026 against its stored source. Automated checks by NestAgent cover part of the data (state clean-up and USD sizes). Any correction is logged in Appendix G. Our interest. LabelNest sells software to funds. Part B, after the appendices, describes three of its products, Atlas, Command and Ascent, and gives LabelNest's own view; the findings in chapters 1 to 12 do not depend on it. What this report does not show Team sizes (sourced as bands for 10 percent of managers), LP mandates beyond 55 funds, whether a fund is active, sub-categories, and a fund size for nine in ten funds. Each chapter says so where it matters, and the scoreboard in chapter 4 lists every field with its coverage. This report presents data, not investment, legal or tax advice. It contains organisation and fund data only: no personal contact details and no count of contacts. Corrections are logged in the appendices.
